CHIANTI NEAR SIENA: C’EST MAGNIFIQUE!

‘C’est magnifique!’ is what one of our clients from France said after two weeks spent in the Chianti region near Siena. And you will understand why once you visit this beautiful part of Tuscany. As we say, Siena is one of Chianti’s most famous cities. Medieval Siena was often thought of as the ‘female counterpart’ to Renaissance Florence. At the centre of Siena is the magnificent piazza of Il Campo, scene of the famous bareback horse race Il Palio, which is a fever that grips Siena twice a year. Among Siena’s other attractions are the striped Cathedral that Ruskin described as ‘a piece of costly confectionery’ and the Palazzo Pubblico (Town Hall) topped by the soaring Torre del Mangia. Inside the town hall is the Museo Civico where you can see Simone Martini’s Guidoriccio. Tourists are also welcome in the city’s many pasticceria or simply soak up the sun in the Campo. You should also make sure you visit the 14th-century Gothic Baptistery of San Giovanni, and the many medieval and Renaissance palaces that survive.
